Bio

Coach Cody Helenbolt was named the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Northwest College in May 2024. He started his coaching career in 2007 as an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Laramie High School. In 2009, he received a teaching job in Douglas, Wyoming where he coached 8^th grade, 9^th grade and Junior Varsity girls’ basketball for 4 seasons. He became the varsity girls’ basketball coach at Douglas High School in 2014 and led the team to a state championship in his first season.  In his 11 years as the varsity coach in Douglas between 2013 and 2024, his teams compiled a 259-28 record and 7 state championships with a possible 8^th state championship wiped out by Covid in 2020. In 2018 and 2019, Douglas was invited to the prestigious Energy Classic in Gillette where they faced nationally ranked teams and came away with a 3^rd place trophy in each tournament. 

Helenbolt has mentored many record-setting and award-winning players including 2-time Gatorade Player of the Year Allyson Fertig and Wyoming all-time assist leader Joslin Igo who both went on to play for the University of Wyoming. He also coached Lauren Olsen who is Douglas High School’s all-time leading scorer and is on pace to break the Wyoming all-time girls career scoring record. Helenbolt’s team broke a 43-year-old record for longest winning streak by winning 48 consecutive games from 2020-2022 and set another Wyoming record by winning 6 consecutive state championships between 2018 and 2024.

He was voted the Wyoming Coaches Association 3A Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year 8 times in his 11 seasons, coached the Wyoming Coaches Association All-Star Game in 2021, has been a presenter at numerous coaching clinics, and was one of 8 finalists for WHSACA National Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year in 2024. 

In Douglas, Helenbolt also coached middle school football for 10 seasons and taught social studies where he was nominated for Wyoming History Teacher of the Year in 2021.  Helenbolt is a 2002 graduate of Lander Valley High School where he participated in basketball, football, and track.  He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in finance and received his master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine in 2016.  Helenbolt’s father Mike was also a high school girls’ basketball coach at Natrona County High School in Casper, Wyoming where he led the Fillies to the 1990 4A Girls’ Basketball State Championship and was an assistant coach for the 1987 and 1989 state championship teams. Cody and his wife Chelsea have 3 daughters Allie, Sadie, and Valerie.
